AIA NC - Summer School: Asheville

Join AIA North Carolina for a half-day Summer School program designed to help architects deepen their understanding of building performance, material impacts, and construction best practices. This engaging program provides 4 HSW credits and includes lunch and networking with colleagues.

The morning begins with Danielle Mokris, Technical Director for the Southeast Region of the Beauty of Block Design Collective, who will lead two sessions exploring embodied carbon in concrete masonry. Through the Beauty of Block’s Embodied Carbon Series, Danielle will break down the environmental impact of concrete materials and explain why not all concrete is created equal. Participants will gain a clearer understanding of carbon sequestration, lifecycle assessment (LCA), and how CMU can play a role in reducing embodied carbon in building design.

The program continues with Derek Hodgin, PE, RBEC, CCCA, F-IIBEC, founder of Positive Friction Consulting, who brings nearly 30 years of experience as a forensic engineer and building enclosure expert. In his interactive session, “It’s All in the Details,” Derek will explore the often-overlooked decisions that can dramatically influence building durability, safety, and long-term performance. Drawing from real-world lessons learned throughout his career, he will share practical insights that architects can immediately apply to improve construction outcomes.

Together, these sessions provide a valuable blend of sustainability insight and practical construction knowledge, equipping architects with the tools to design buildings that are both environmentally responsible and built to last.

AIA NC - March O.W.L.S.: Exploring Tall Wood, New Code Provisions for Tall Timber Structures

As interest in and use of mass timber in the U.S. has grown, so too has interest in pushing these timber structures to greater heights. Prior to the 2021 International Building Code, using international examples of successful tall wood buildings as precedent, some designers proposed tall wood projects in the states using a project-specific performance-based design approach. In order to provide a uniform set of code provisions for these tall wood buildings, the International Code Council established an ad hoc committee on tall wood buildings that proposed a set of code changes allowing up to 18 stories of mass timber construction. Those code changes were announced as approved in January 2019 and became part of the 2021 International Building Code. Following a brief discussion of history and motivators, this presentation will introduce the new tall wood code provisions and construction types, as well as the technical research and testing that supported their adoption.

AIA NC: COTE book talk - Climate Adaptation for Architects

Author and architect Allison Anderson will talk about her book, Climate Adaptation for Architects: A Design Toolkit. The will present this a comprehensive reference for adaptation strategies to create a more resilient built environment at the community, site, and building scale. Each of the 45 chapters includes a Definition of the adaptation measure, the Background in which the measure was developed and tested, and the context in which it might be successful. Key Design Considerations outlines questions, recommendations, implementation steps, and metrics for success.

Anderson will share how design teams can implement these strategies for impact on four systems: social, environmental, economic, and spatial considerations. Anderson will talk about how architecture teams in any region, working on projects of any scale, can bring these considerations into their processes and how they relate to the AIA Framework for Design Excellence and four outcome categories. A robust Q&A period, first with the reviewer and then with the session participants, will follow the presentation.

AIA NC - February O.W.L.S. with HGC Noise Vibration Acoustics: The Sound of Good Design: Practical Noise and Vibration Control for Diverse Spaces

Although architects aim to create spaces that are both inspiring and practical, neglecting acoustics can turn even the most beautiful designs into uncomfortable environments for occupants, often leading to frequent complaints. Noise and vibration issues lead to frustration, privacy concerns, and costly fixes after occupancy. In schools, poor acoustics undermine learning; in offices, they compromise speech clarity and confidentiality; in homes, they disrupt sleep and well-being. Healthcare and research facilities face even greater stakes, where vibration can impair proper functioning of sensitive diagnostic equipment.

This course shows why early attention to acoustics protects your design intent and your client’s investment. You’ll learn practical strategies to prevent noise and vibration problems before they occur, explore real-world examples of what goes wrong, and discover how partnering with an acoustical consultant can save time, money, and reputation - while creating spaces that truly work for people.

AIA NC Climate Tuesday Lunchtime Series

As we proudly kick off our fifth year of the Fall Climate Series, we’re excited to start with a special highlight: a video by Dave Borlace titled “How I Make My Videos.” Many assume, like I did, that Dave has a full production crew behind him—handling everything from research to graphics—week after week, all year long.

Surprise: Dave is a one-man powerhouse! Curious how he manages it all?

For New Participants:

Each session features two engaging programs, followed by lively discussions. AIANC provides a detailed technical write-up to help you self-report your participation to AIA and earn one hour of Learning Unit (LU) credit per program.

Remember, in addition to the 12 HSW units required annually to maintain your license, AIA also mandates six additional units—either Learning Units or Self-Reported credits. Please note, LU’s do not count as HSW credits.

This fall, I invite you to reconnect with colleagues and explore the profound impact of climate change. Together, we’ll discuss innovative efforts across sectors to address this critical reality—both in our professional practice and daily lives.

AIA NC - COTE Program 1: Indoor airPLUS and Green Built Homes

This course explores indoor air quality through the lens of two commonly available certification programs in North Carolina. The first hour of the course focuses on the EPA's Indoor AirPlus certification program. The general structure and process of the program is described, followed by a description of the point categories and strategies needed to qualify for the program. The second hour of the course describes the Greenbuilt Homes program, which is a North Carolina-based program that encompasses all aspects of green building. This presentation focuses specifically on that program's indoor air quality related pre-requisites and optional point category. Topics include: radon, combustion safety, VOCs, formaldehyde, ventilation systems, and moisture management.

Climate Tuesdays

AIA NC - Positioning for Net Zero: Architectural-Structural Coordination to Reduce Carbon in Structures

The SE 2050 Commitment for structural engineers addresses embodied carbon in building materials, and the Architecture 2030 Commitment addresses both operational and embodied carbon.  Discipline coordination is needed to fulfill these commitment goals on projects.

During this presentation, two members of the Sustainable Design Committee of the Structural Engineers Association of North Carolina – Senior Structural Engineer, Bethany Whitehurst, P.E., S.E., of Clark Nexsen, A JMT Company and Design Engineer, Alyssa Libby, E.I. of Bennett & Pless – will discuss the differences between operational and embodied carbon and how embodied carbon is calculated for materials.

This session will address how architects and structural engineers can coordinate to reduce both operational and embodied carbon to meet the carbon reduction goals through identifying embodied carbon hot spots, incorporating thermal breaks at exterior structural elements, performing carbon intensity bay studies, and reusing structure.  The presentation will also address marketing embodied carbon reduction to clients and the consideration of sustainability in building design awards.
