This course is designed to give architects and contractors a broad understanding of the Energy Star new homes program as well as a deeper understanding of how design decisions come together into a package that will pass the stricter version 3.2 of the program. The first hour of the course focuses on how the Energy Star program is structured, what versions mean, and how Energy Star implements them to continuously improve energy efficiency. It describes the checklists and some common mechanics and pitfalls to all the versions. The second hour takes a deeper dive into four prototypical house types and shows how project teams might make a package of design decisions about insulation, windows, mechanical equipment, and appliances that all comes together to achieve a passing score for this challenging program.
