Description: Participants compare conventional demolition with planned deconstruction, including differences in dust generation, hazardous-material management, site activities, waste production, employment, and material recovery. They also examine policies, incentives, and implementation barriers that influence whether deconstruction and reuse can be conducted safely and effectively. Participants then apply design-for-disassembly principles to building details, connections, and assemblies. Designing components so they can be accessed, separated, repaired, replaced, or recovered can reduce hazardous demolition activities and improve the adaptability and useful life of buildings. Understanding these principles helps architects coordinate safe construction and future disassembly while ensuring that connections and assemblies satisfy applicable structural, fire, accessibility, durability, and other code requirements during their service life.
