Concrete technology and material availability continue to evolve, yet many project specifications still rely on outdated, prescriptive language often copied from previous projects without evaluating current performance goals or supply chain realities. This course equips design professionals with practical strategies for developing modern concrete specifications that encourage innovation while maintaining quality. 

Participants will explore the limitations of "copy-and-paste" specifications, examine how prescriptive requirements can unintentionally restrict material selection and project flexibility, and learn how performance-based specifications can better align with today's concrete technologies, including blended cements, supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs), admixtures, and emerging sustainable solutions. Through real-world examples, attendees will learn how to critically evaluate existing specifications, collaborate effectively with producers and contractors, and write specifications that prioritize measurable performance outcomes over rigid material prescriptions. The session will also address supply chain considerations, risk mitigation, and best practices for creating resilient and future-ready concrete specifications.
