While Net Zero Energy is a goal we strive for in the US, in other countries it becomes a necessity. In Haiti, there is no reliable power grid, and in the rural areas there is no water or sewer system. In this case study, we will look at a medical clinic being designed and built (in shipping containers) here in North Carolina, and then being shipped and reassembled in rural northern Haiti. All water must be purified on site from a well and all energy will be from solar PV, utilizing battery storage so that the clinic can operate year round. The systems must be robust, easy to maintain (no maintenance personnel) and in-expensive: a very challenging trio.
