2009 Design and Chapter Awards
President's Message
Ann Collier, AIA, 2009 AIANC President
“…in architecture the experience comes first. That has the deepest effect on us.”
- Thomas Mayne
It is my great honor to be able to ‘experience’, with all of you, these Design and Chapter Awards… a program that has a long and distinguished history. 2009 adds even more excitement as we add new honors. I would like to offer my thanks to Mark Reyer, AIA, for his insight and energy in chairing the Design Awards Committee, and to the entire committee for its commitment and perseverance in making these new additions a reality.
Because North Carolina has so many talented architects, the committee wanted to acknowledge the work of members who exhibit unparalleled design ability in very specific areas: Historic Preservation / Restoration and Sustainable Design, in addition to Honor, Merit and Chapter Citation accolades.
Enjoy the winning projects - all 25 of them! - as well as the Chapter Award winners for the Firm of the Year, Deitrick Service Medal, Gail Lindsey Sustainability Award, and F. Carter Williams Gold Medal...and as you do, I ask you to reflect on the following: How can these extraordinary ‘experiences’ that we encounter every day with each other NOT have a deep effect on us and on our profession? I hope you are profoundly affected and proud to be an AIANC member…especially during times such as these!
Miss the evening? Purchase a copy of the book with all of the 2009 entries, juror bios, and President's Message, and overview from the 2009 Design Awards Committee Chair, Mark Reyer. Only $15.95!

2009 WoodWorks© Wood Design Awards
The purpose of the WoodWorks© Wood Award is to recognize well-designed projects by AIANC members that specify, design or build commercial, industrial, and institutional projects with wood. (Residential projects are not selected.) This award acknowledges those individuals or firms who contribute to the selection of wood in a project, who overcome obstacles related to wood use, and who lead the way for future projects in wood. Selection favors well-designed solutions that exhibit creativity in innovative structures that push the boundaries of conventional wood building practice, either in external application or internal building structures. Learn more about WoodWorks: www.woodworks.org.
